Brodrick, Jocelyn (1984 - 2006)

The first time I met Jos she offered me half of her biscuit because I forgotten to take my lunch to TAFE. The last time I saw Jos she invited me to her very late housewarming. This describes Jos so well. She was most buoyant when she was giving, because that met she was needed. Jos was so understandably preoccupied with her thoughts, her true nature only unravelled when she was distracted. I found such beauty in her everyday actions. Jos coloured her drawings to the edge of the paper. Jos giggled loudly at the cartoons in the morning. Jos curled her arms in and pushed out her chin when she hugged me. She read aloud from her textbooks. She would put on her red dress when she wanted to look pretty. She cooked chocolate brownies for Julia and I and would say they were for her. Jos would come shopping with me every time I was bored. She always ordered the Hawaiian double cheese. Her smile radiated, refracted and then retreated. She would always put half of her fortnightly money into her piggy bank and rattle it hard whenever she has to go to the shops. Jos made delicate sculptures of solitary women. She always shared her wine. You shared your life. Thankyou. It has been such a precious-sweet gift.
