Irene Davies Ball Steinhofer, age 90, of Mount Dora, passed away July 7, 1999 in Mount Dora, Florida, after a lengthy and courageous battle against overwhelming medical odds. She was born August 25, 1908, in Lincoln, Nebraska to the late George Stanley Davies and Ethel Irene Faunce Davies. She graduated cum laude from the University of Nebraska with a degree in Fine Arts in 1929, after which she toured for over a year with the Pavley-Orkransky Ballet Company. She then toured the U.S. alone, casting, directing, and producing Home Talent Shows. In 1931, this brought her to Ocala, Florida, where she met and married Clarence Strouse Peery “Red” Ball, D.O., Obstetrician and Gynecologist, who practiced in Ocala, Eustis, and Boca Raton, where he founded that city’s first hospital in 1948. He was also one of the founders of Miami Osteopathic Hospital, and practiced in Miami, where Irene was medical secretary to him, then office manager for endocrinologist and diagnosticician Carlos Lamar, M.D., and later head secretary to the Chief Pathologist at Miami Heart Institute, from which she retired in 1977. Dr. Ball predeceased Irene in January, 1958. On April 25, 1969, Irene married Carl A. Steinhofer, Dade County School Inspector, and continued residence in Miami Springs until their retirement to Overlook Drive in Mount Dora in 1980. They retired further, to Waterman Village, in 1993. Mrs. Steinhofer was a member of Sigma Kappa Sorority, an avid bridge player, a good golfer, an excellent dancer, part of the Shrine Auxiliary, and a member of the St. Edward’s Episcopal Church in Mount Dora. She leaves to cherish her memory her beloved husband of 30 years, Carl A. Steinhofer (deceased September 13, 2005); one daughter, Susan Ball Brandy Booth Hertzberger (deceased November 27, 2000) of West Palm Beach, Florida; two granddaughters, Allison Lee Brandy (wife of David J. Scruggs) of Winston-Salem, North Carolina and Erin Lockhart Brandy (life-partner of Lydia Bassetti) of Ellijay, Georgia; and two great-granddaughters Gillian Margaret Brandy Scruggs and Haley Irene Brandy Scruggs of Winston-Salem, North Carolina. A memorial service was held at Waterman Village on Saturday, July 10, 1999 at 1:30 p.m. A private interment service was held at a later date at the family plot in Boca Raton, Florida. In lieu of flowers, the family requested that memorial contributions be made to the American Cancer Society or to any Humane Animal Shelter or Organization. |
